About him
Writing a profile here feels rather like being cast by one’s agent in a role one suspects may demand more sincerity than comfort, yet the audience is seated, the coughing has begun, and the curtain is up. There is nothing left but to step onstage and break a leg.
I’m a kind man seeking a kind woman. This sounds simple, which is usually a sign that it isn’t. Kindness, I have found, is rarely solitary. It tends to arrive with footnotes. Humour matters to me, the spontaneous kind rather than anything requiring diagrams. Without it, compatibility becomes two courteous visitors wandering the same gallery, each privately wondering why the other is moved by the fire extinguisher.
I am drawn to people who notice the world and are generous in spirit. Lists of achievements are impressive, but they are usually short conversations. Ease matters more.
My work flew me a lot for more than twenty five years, fifteen of them spent living elsewhere, in international newspaper publishing and later its digital offspring. Long haul travel teaches small truths. One of them is that airport coffee tastes faintly of tiredness, adrenaline and acquiescence. I remember this flavour well, which is why I’ve ground my own beans for years.
Later I launched two start up companies. They were instructive. I learned a great deal about human nature, some of it fascinating, some of it best left unnamed. Perspective eventually arrived, as it always does, slightly late and without apology. Wisdom is almost always hard won. .
Honesty matters to me because without it no prevailing connection is possible. I have seen how easily people mislead others, and how enthusiastically they mislead themselves. It becomes so difficult to reach someone once they have fallen in love with their own explanation.
I write, paint, sketch, fix things and cook. The cooking is creative too and just involves plates rather than canvas and the occasional intervention of the smoke alarm. Creativity, I find, steadies the mind and improves most things, including conversation.

I sometimes wonder why so many of us behave as though we are auditioning for a travel documentary. I enjoy a journey, but I have no urgent wish to conquer Everest, ride through Patagonia on a unicycle, or find Atlantis. These days I value good company, shared laughter, and the kind of companionship that makes life feel lighter rather than busier.
I must admit I am mildly vaguely puzzled by extremely brief profiles here. Three words, two photographs, one of a hat in a desert may be intriguing, but they don’t help shine too much of a light.
I admire people who take care of themselves and enjoy being active, not as a competitive sport but as a sign of wanting to feel at home in one’s own body. Kindness and emotional awareness matter. Knowing roughly what one feels before it takes over the room is a considerable advantage.
Children and grandchildren are cherished in my life. Those without them are just as welcome. All that is required is an understanding that family sometimes rearranges the day without prior notice.
I would far rather meet the person who is actually there than an imagined ideal. Honesty, clarity, humour, and a willingness to see life as it is matter most. If any of this sounds familiar, or faintly preferable, please poke me.
